What is Stainless Steel 301LN ?
301LN is an austenitic grade of stainless steel known for its increased strength while retaining excellent formability. It is a nitrogen-bearing version of 301, with an added benefit of reduced carbon content to enhance the resistance to corrosion as well as weldability. The UNS designation for 301LN is S30153 whereas the European equivalent is EN 1.4318.
What distinguishes 301LN from others is that it retains mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures, and as such, it is a high-demand material in industries where strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance are required.

FAQs
How does 301LN differ from 301 and 301L stainless steels?
301LN has a greater nitrogen content than 301 and 301L, though all three are austenitic stainless steels with generally similar overall compositions. The higher nitrogen in 301LN gives it greater strength and corrosion resistance and it is an appropriate selection for use where these are especially desirable.
Is 301LN applicable for use in cryogenic temperatures?
Yes, 301LN's high nitrogen content increases its low-temperature toughness and makes it applicable for cryogenic use.
Does 301LN rust?
Like all stainless steels, it resists corrosion but in extremely corrosive environments, an appropriate surface treatment is recommended.
How does cold working affect 301LN stainless steel?
Cold working considerably enhances the strength of 301LN due to strain hardening. The tensile strength can be increased to about 1,200-1,400 MPa and the yield strength to around 700-900 MPa, thereby improving fatigue resistance.
What are the corrosion resistance properties of 301LN stainless steel?
301LN provides good corrosion resistance in most environments. It is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments, but proper surface treatments and maintenance can improve its corrosion resistance.
